Once, there were hard-covered, leather-finished tomes. I love those...

Still, I am far more omnivorous reader, incl. of paperbacks & ebooks.

Class-based Programming Languages, including: Common Lisp, Clu (programming Language), Eiffel (programming Language), Java (programming Language), Oberon (programming Language), Objective-c, Python (programming Language), Ruby (programming Language), Qu - Hephaestus Books Suppose you're off on a secluded island, holidays that is, with no wifi around, no dial-up available and no satellite dish/phone to try to connect to the WWW. What do you use then to gather new knowledge and experiences? Besides your partner during night-long day-long discovering of your potential of course, the answer would probably be books or experiments. Well, this small book serves its purpose of, being a book and a compilation of wikipedia articles, offering you some one book shows all introduction to most of the well-known class-based languages. So if stranded on that island you find you need to rewrite a class in a language you don't know already you can use this book as it covers this short time introduction between those you already must have mastered and those you'd like to easily learn without painfull and boring semester-long courses. Sure, you won't become the grandmaster of any of these languages just by reading this book, but to simply comprehend the basic constructions and how to write them in so many alnguages would be a great kickstart to using either as you see fit. It's also good for total newcomers, as most constructs and basic operators are discussed enough for those without prior background to get into grips with class-based programming. However, if you've got an Internet access you might rather consider using online always up-to-date version of the articles devoted to the language you need to learn or simply search for a short and comprehensive bible-style web course/compendium devoted to a certain language of your liking. After all, it's quite short, this book, compared to all those bibles and programming guides containing 500+ pages each, but do not mistake it - this book is solely for presenting a compilation of articles on quite a few languages and should be used as an easy way to fluently learn how the basics are done in more than 1 language. Programmers, you know, need to be polyglots more often than translators do ;)

Fundamentals of Codes, Graphs, and Iterative Decoding (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science)

Fundamentals Of Codes, Graphs, And Iterative Decoding - Stephen B. Wicker Short, easy to follow, fairly explanatory, be it basic math or matrix calculations, most of the information is given rather straightforwardly, yet the authors require of the readers more than basic "1+2=3" knowledge and practice in math. However once you're worthy or at least better prepared, those fundamentals of coding and other aspects presented in the book simply unveil almost all of the secrets. How far into the maths you must be to properly understand all the descriptions? If you're in a college working on a math degree or IT degree, the first year of the studies with math introduction would easily give you the upper hand. Otherwise you might need to jump for other books in search of explanations. Whatever the level of your math skills, I'd still highly suggest taking this book. Without preparation you're going to learn more, but life is made the way you learn a bit every single day, it's how it is... Is it worth your money and time? If you're into the topic, I certainly believe so. After all, it's fairly concise yet informative enough to earn a place on your bookshelf.

Vademecum maturzysty - historia najnowsza po 1945 roku

Vademecum maturzysty - historia najnowsza po 1945 roku - Janusz Micuń A short mini-compendium of post 1945 world history. Good for students looking for a short and comprehensive guide to the topic school books only slightly unravel. Great for history olympics attendees as it's easier to locate any kind of information in a single book, and it's easier to look up most things if your memory does not serve you well anymore ;)

Potrójna reintegracja

Potrójna reintegracja - Robert Sheckley Have you ever felt as if you were not yourself? As if there are two or three yous inside? As if every day you were fighting with your other you to stay in control? In the future they found a solution - they "surgically" extract those other sides, those Hydes your Jekyl fears might make him Hulk down everyone in the near vicinity and hurt your beloved ones. Then, they send them far, far away, far enough to never cross your paths... Is it a good solution to the problem? The hero of the story, or rather the heroes, tried it and while at the beginning everything seemed alright soon it became obvious one can't exist without his shadow, Jekyl can't cope without Hyde, Banner needs his Hulk... So our character goes after his alter egos to unite oneself once more and like Banner he soon finds he might not be ready for what his other selves have done. Can he become the one? Or maybe it's not a good idea? After all, you can't undone what's happened without repercussions. Will the space and time help him unite? Usually heroes survive, break a few bones, get the girls, run from the bad guys, but here are 3 drastically different heroes whose unification means death to a pair of them. Would you say yes and join with a stranger self when you have your own life to live through? Yeah, that's the problem of our hero going after his each other self. If you're interested how to deal with the monster inside you and how removing it might disrupt the delicate balance and only wreak more havoc, how to try to recover lost parts and how you might end with this gruesome task jedi masters would be afraid to take on, than get this book.

Vademecum historyka starożytnej Grecji i Rzymu

Vademecum historyka starożytnej Grecji i Rzymu - Ewa Wipszycka A short mini-compendium of ancient era of 2 great european/mediterranean empires. Good for students looking for a short and comprehensive guide to the topic school books and cliff notes etc. only slightly unravel. Great for history olympics attendees and university students as it's easier to locate any kind of information in this single rather thorough book - it's just easier to look up most things if your memory does not serve you well anymore ;)

Bilet na Tranai

Bilet na Tranai - Robert Sheckley, Stanisław Czaja Short, simple, light, yet as with Sheckley's work, just as captivating nonetheless. Definitely worth trying unless other larger compilations are available. Since its so short it can be read in a day, tops. You might get hooked but to really enjoy Sheckley's storytelling I'd suggest going elsewhere. Again, it's a compilation of only a few stories, interesting for those who already hunt for Robert Sheckley's works, but only mildly good for new-comers.Even though stories are from the 50s-60s or so, their core is not that dissimilar to many stories returning to the scene now and then since the mythologies, with the punch line always correct, as now as before and as in the future, these stories seem to transcend any cultural and temporal limitations and hit you with the naked truth that has always been right beside you from the start of your journey.Polish translation doesn't struggle with the storytelling, it's an easy read. Together with the original scene creation and character presentation, one shouldn't feel deferred from following onto next pages.

Bored of the Rings: A Parody of J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings

Bored of the Rings: A Parody of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings - The Harvard Lampoon, Henry Beard, Douglas C. Kenney Tolkien is thy master, Tolkien is right and the Silmarillion, LotR, short stories and Hobbit as well, make your bible. Thou shall never wrong thy masters words, thou shall never amuse yourself with his words 'cause they are the only truth... That seems to be the motto of all those die-hard Tolkien fans. Sure, recent movies might have changed the lot a bit, but when joining that herd be sure to follow those rules... but what if you're more into funny stuff? What if you know the LotR throughout, if you know 99% of popular movies and books, what then? What does that make you? In short, the adressee of this short story... Imagine for a moment that you can lash out at the fantasy bible? But is it possible? Sure, just add some laugh-out-loud elements, mocking parody with a scent of irony and mix it with regular lampoon-like attention to details and here you have it - "Bored of the Rings" is born, or rather moulded...Why little hobbits are so eager to walk across lands and risk their lives on a quest to save the lands? They do not know others, heck they do not even like others and vice versa... Should they even go where dusty old street-fare wizards would never commit themselves? And why on earth do those elves keep them away from strangers? Is it because of their purity of the blood? Of their belief their better than others? So why not just let them deal with the nightmares? Maybe all those elders wth their high sitting positions and power over lands are only fakes and stupid ones? Are you tormented by these questions? (Cue: if yes go to bookstore and get this book, if no - do the same nonetheless) Maybe a bit of a fresh halfling blood and their wits would unravel the truth behind the idealised bible's story? Are you ready to find out what really happened and how the truth got distorted into Tolkien's universe of heroes and heroines? If you're armed with your wits and know what's what in LotR and elsewhere than this atrocious shameful deformation of a typical and world-famous from-zero-to-hero story of brave ones on the quest is just for you. And please try not to be too hampered by aforementioned commandments... Then, and only then, thou shall see a myriad of ways the original fellowship of the ring haven't even thought of. But remember! If you do not know the story of LotR well enough or your wisecracking witticismarising mind can't cope with the detailed alterations do not hurt yourself and spend the time and cash elsewhere. Otherwise, it's time to party with the halflings and their comrades.
